The Dutch national team started the training camp on Monday morning on their way to next month’s European championship. The Orange will then at least face Austria, Ukraine and North Macedonia, after which it hopes for more duels. After the tough corona season, it is for the national coach to see which players are in shape.

It will not be easy for De Boer to put together his ideal team in the coming weeks. This week, the national coach had a group of 34 players who all wanted to participate in the group matches in the Johan Cruijff Arena in June. Fortunately for De Boer and the players group, the Dutch national team was not allowed to bring the usual 23, but 26 players to this European Championship. It meant that the coach only had to choose eight names that were not allowed to participate in the final tournament.

Daley Blind can come along for the time being. However, if he is not fit in time, the Ajax player will still be a loser at De Boer. The central defender was badly injured in the 0-7 win against Gibraltar, which meant he had to miss the rest of the season. Moreover, many feared his absence during the European Championship. Blind, however, has recovered very quickly in recent months and seems to have a good chance of participating, although it will be a race against time in the coming weeks.

Rick Karsdorp, Anwar El Ghazi, Marco Bizot, Kenny Tete, the injured Hans Hateboer, Tonny Vilhena, Jeremiah St. Juste and Steven Bergwijn were provisionally told that they were not allowed to go to the European Championship. It is a logical decision by De Boer, who had several players in his preliminary selection who were reasonably interchangeable. For example, Steven Bergwijn and Quincy Promes are quite similar in their football style. Although the national coach had to think twice in recent days before he chose Promes.

Serious incident

Anyone who saw Promes play at Ajax in the 2019/2020 season never expected that the Orange-international would soon leave the club. The left winger had an excellent click with trendsetter Hakim Ziyech, from which the team from Amsterdam benefited several times. The recipe was clear. Ziyech cut in from the right and placed the ball flawlessly behind the opponent’s defense with feeling. At that moment Promes started his running action, he ran from the back of his direct opponent and headed home.

The attacker seemed to have found his way again after a number of bad seasons, but nothing turned out to be further from the truth. Where Promes scored another goal for Ajax against PEC Zwolle in mid-December, it went wrong the next day. Police arrested him for involvement in a serious stabbing involving a relative of his. The incident is said to have taken place in a shed in Abcoude at the end of July. Although Promes continues to deny the event for the time being, the matter is still hanging over his head.

The problems surrounding Promes were not exactly good for Ajax. Where the team from Amsterdam already had enough to themselves with the elimination in the Champions League and disappointing results in December, they could not have the Promes case. Director of football affairs Marc Overmars quickly decided to look for another club for him. Since his old club Spartak Moscow wanted to bring Promes back to Russia and Ajax did not ask for a high amount, the deal was closed pretty quickly.

Out of shape

His return to Russia seemed to do him good, because in his second game Promes immediately showed his added value. Spartak Moscow was playing against Tony Vilhena’s Krasnodar at the time, which was shown all corners of the field in the game. The home team won no less than 6-1 and Promes was the big man with a goal and an assist. It seemed like a prelude to many goals, but for the time being Promes only managed to score a goal in the duels with Oral Yekaterinburg and Akhmat Grozny. He also delivered two more assists.

The lesser form of Promes undoubtedly has to do with the lawsuit that is still hanging over his head. Peter R. de Vries countered in March Football time that it doesn’t look good for Promes. “There will be a court hearing at some point and then the question is whether he will come there. If he does not come, he can be sentenced in absentia. If that is irrevocable, it means that from that moment on he will no longer be able to travel. A football player who can no longer travel, that is impossible. So there are still really difficult times ahead of him. “

In case of a conviction, it is almost impossible for the native Amsterdammer to avoid his sentence. Although he is a footballer of Spartak Moscow and therefore lives in Russia, he can no longer travel freely through Europe. As a result, it would not be feasible to come out for the Orange. Given a jail term of up to four years for the incident, it could completely disrupt Promes’ football career. It is therefore not easy for the player to put aside the eventful season.

Orange odds

Despite the season of Promes, De Boer decided to include him in his final selection. It probably has everything to do with the player’s past. Although he is in a significantly lesser form this year, he has frequently shown in recent years that he can be of added value for the Dutch national team. Promes scored several important goals for his team and, moreover, always committed one hundred percent. De Boer is undoubtedly curious whether Promes can still deliver the same.

Nevertheless, De Boer is also taking a great risk with his choice of Promes. The player can also cause a lot of unrest during the tournament. For example, if the case is progressed and news suddenly comes about Promes’s lawsuit, this could mess up the entire concentration of the Dutch national team. The national coach can certainly not use that when he goes on a trip with the talented group of players. That is why it is hoped for the head coach that further problems will not occur.

It remains to be seen whether De Boer thinks he is good enough to be part of his basic team. Since he has already made the choice to bring Promes with him, De Boer will have to look exclusively at his football qualities in the coming weeks. When Promes is more than anyone else able to lead the Orange to victory in the quarter finals of the tournament, De Boer simply has to choose Promes. The Orange audience may be skeptical for the time being, but an important goal will undoubtedly turn the swear around.
