DFB team or old football love
Bayern legend Gerland is in great demand
It was only a few days ago that I left FC Bayern, and Hermann Gerland apparently already has several offers on the table. Bochum’s managing director always has a job free for the “Tiger”, he promises. And it could go on alongside Hansi Flick.
If Bayern legend Hermann Gerland wants a job at his hometown club VfL Bochum, he would have a good chance. “If he wants, a door is always open for him at VfL,” said Bochum managing director Ilja Kaenzig of “WAZ”. The former Bochum player and coach was not asked. “That would be disrespectful and presumptuous if we approached him now and pressured him in the euphoria of the ascent.” If Gerland should think of a job at VfL after leaving Bayern, “then we’ll see.”
Gerland comes from Bochum and enjoys cult status there. At the end of the past season, the 66-year-old had terminated his contract, which ran until 2022. The “Tiger” was active in Munich for two and a half decades, most recently as an assistant coach. “The initiative came from me,” Gerland told the “Welt”. However, retirement is out of the question: “I always joke: I will work until 92, then will I start part-time working for older people.”
About the rise of VfL Bochum, Gerland went into raptures in the “Welt”: “My feeling of happiness is indescribable: I’m excited.” He is sure, however, that new players are urgently needed for the team: “And that is where the problem is. There is a lack of finances. As when I played and later coached the club, this is the big drawback.”
Next to Flick’s side?
So maybe no future in Bochum after all? Well, he can obviously choose. As an assistant coach, he could now continue to work elsewhere. Namely still at the side of Hansi Flick. Gerland has the option to switch to the German Football Association with the new national football coach, reports “Bild”. It is said that both sides could continue to imagine this collaboration. Flick thinks of the old hand very much. But Gerland is apparently competing with Miroslav Klose for this post. The third to leave Bavaria. Rumors about his entry at Fortuna Düsseldorf broke up on Thursday: Christian Preusser takes over the position of head coach at the second division club.
The new Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann has meanwhile defended himself against the fact that he was to blame for Gerland’s departure from FC Bayern. “I told the club that I would like to bring two assistant coaches and an analyst with me. But I never said that I had no space for this or that employee or that someone was not wanted,” Nagelsmann told Sport Bild “. He has “a very good relationship with the 66-year-old. But neither is he my serf, whom I can tie up at the club.”
The discoverer of stars like Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller, Mats Hummels or David Alaba will quickly find a new job. At the DFB he would even meet some of his former pupils.
