Family doctors are calling for more rights for unvaccinated children too
After the vaccination summit, the German Association of General Practitioners calls on the federal and state governments not to make the return to social life of children and adolescents dependent on vaccinations. “It was the children and young people who put their freedoms aside for over a year in order to protect the elderly,” said Ulrich Weigeldt, head of the association, of the “Rheinische Post”: “Now it is up to the adults to show solidarity and do everything possible to give them back their rights as quickly as possible – and not only to school, but also to community, to leisure activities, to sport”.
In the current situation there are “definitely more options than just immediate vaccination – the current restrictions that children and adolescents experience are ultimately based on political decisions.”
At the same time, Weigeldt criticized the precautionary restraint of vaccination doses for children and adolescents: “Whether and against what children and adolescents should be vaccinated can only be answered from a medical and scientific point of view and not from a political one.” Currently, however, both approval and recommendation are missing for this age group, the head of the association continues: “From this point of view, it is completely absurd to withhold vaccination doses instead of inoculating them immediately.” (KNA)
