Bitter evening for Kevin De Bruyne: The Manchester City captain had to be replaced after a clash in the Champions League final. The 29-year-old now gave an update on the severity of his injuries.

It was a momentous clash in the 55th minute of the Champions League final: Manchester’s captain Kevin De Bruyne crashed head-on with Chelsea defender Antonio Rüdiger. After that, both remained on the lawn, dazed. Rüdiger, who was wearing a protective mask because of a fractured cheekbone, saw the yellow card for the action, but was able to continue playing. De Bruyne, on the other hand, had to be treated on the pitch for minutes and then replaced in tears. In the end, his team lost 1-0 to their rivals from London.

One day after the lost final, the Belgian spoke up on Twitter and gave an update on the severity of his injuries. “Hi folks, I’ve just come out of the hospital. My diagnosis is a broken nose and orbital floor fracture on the left side. I’m fine so far. I’m still disappointed about yesterday, of course, but we will come back stronger,” wrote the 29-year-old . An orbital floor fracture means the fracture of the floor of the orbit towards the maxillary sinus. “Everyone at the club wishes you a speedy recovery,” tweeted De Bruyne’s club Manchester City to his message.

It is not yet clear whether the injury will also endanger the Belgian’s participation in the European Championship. The tournament starts on June 11th. One day later, Belgium will play their first group game against Russia in St. Petersburg. Other opponents in Group B are Denmark (June 17th) and Finland (June 21st). Kevin de Bruyne has played for the Belgian national team since 2010.

In his professional career he has been under contract with Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg and has played for Manchester City since 2015. From 2012 to 2014 he worked under coach José Mourinho at Chelsea FC, but was also loaned to Werder Bremen during that time.
