Benoît Paire will not see Tokyo – Release

Action reaction. More present on social networks than on the courts, standing out more often by his behavior off the field than by his victories with racket in hand, Benoît Paire is a divisive character. Some adore him, others annoy his incessant provocative outings. The French Tennis Federation (FFT) seems to belong to the second category. In a press release published this Friday, she denounces a “Repetition of deeply inappropriate behavior” and “words deeply contrary to the ethics of sport and the values of tennisfrom the player, who forced her to “Remove Benoît Paire from a possible selection at the Tokyo Games”. No trip this summer to Japan, therefore, for the French.

It must be said that the federation had already warned him. At the beginning of March, its president, Gilles Moretton, had already spoken with the current 35th player in the world in the ATP rankings to talk about his attitude on and off the field. He was at the time criticized for his behavior during his match against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, in the second round of the Buenos Aires tournament. Faced with a player yet much lower ranked than him, the French had lost his nerves, after what he considered to be a bad arbitration decision.

“Nothing to jerk off from this match”

He was then more than vehement towards the official, had spat on the field, before finally botching his end of the match voluntarily, and losing (6-4; 3-6; 1-6). Criticized on social networks, he had posted a photo showing his career financial gains (7.1 million euros) to silence his detractors, accompanying him to the legend “In the end, it’s worth it to suckAnd a middle finger emoji. Benoît Paire had finally sent a letter of apology to the ethics committee of the FFT and the incident had stopped there.

But on April 11, the former 18th world player is again talking about him. Bowing in the first round of the Monte-Carlo tournament – his eighth loss in nine singles matches this year – the bearded man falls back into his faults during a lunar press conference. Sad to have to play without spectators, and “Unhappy on the court”, Benoît Paire had sworn in front of the media not to have “Nothing to jerk off about this match” : “I took 12,000 euros to be in a quiet hotel. After I go home, it’s perfect. ”

The output too much for the federation which therefore decided to crack down on Friday and exclude French from the selection process for the Olympic Games. Present in Rio during the 2016 Games, Benoît Paire had already had problems with the FFT. While he had just been beaten in the second round of the competition, the tennis player was fired by the federation after “Several crops” and “A lot of breaches of the rules of life”. At the center of the discord the singer Shy’m, his ex-companion, with whom he spent his nights in a hotel rather than staying, as is customary, in the Olympic village.
