Bolzano ascends the throne of Italy of badminton. The South Tyrolean company won the Scudetto in the final phase played in Sardinia after overcoming the hosts of the MaraBadminton. Guided by the technician Hamza, the Bolzano team was able to count on the strength of its doubles trained by the young women Fink e Hamza and by the male couple Русев e Nikolov. Nikolov himself was the author of the deciding point in the men’s singular.
Bolzano brings back to South Tyrol a title that had been missing for several years. The last time was the Merano to establish itself in 2004, the winning cycles of the Mediterranea Cinisi and of the Milan subsequently began. An important recognition for a sports club that has been working in the area for years thanks to different realities. The goal is to promote sport in all its essence and work on young people; in badminton they are succeeding with brilliant results as the sports director from Bolzano told our microphones Rudi Bocher.
First national title after 25 years of activity. Are you highly satisfied with this result?
We are delighted above all because one of the fundamental points was achieved by our players Katharina Fink and Yasmine Hamza, who we have been following since they were ten years old. An important title for the whole region because it comes almost sixteen years after the last success of a team from South Tyrol. We are very happy with this; we also received compliments from Arno Kompatscher, president of the autonomous province of Bolzano.
Bolzano has been able to distinguish itself for the activity carried out at the youth level. An important step to spread badminton in the area
In the last ten years we have focused a lot on young people. We collaborate with about twenty schools in Bolzano and beyond with the aim of presenting and promoting badminton. It has been quite a long process, but now we are seeing the first results. There are Under, 15, Under 16 and Under 17 players called up for the national team, many promises from our nursery.
School participation is a relevant key. Encourage students to approach sport and introduce different disciplines
Collaboration with schools is important for us as a multi-sports club, it is something mutual. The didactic structures are satisfied if we propose different types of disciplines, we if we have the opportunity to propose them. We organize summer weeks every year with 800/900 children; on these occasions we present our thirteen sports. Our project can also count on the collaboration with the Badminton School which provides technical help. For us the youth sector is the foundation of everything; there are always exceptions such as handball Serie A or floorball where we find top athletes, but everything is built starting from young people.
Let’s open a little parenthesis on Tokyo games. Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992. There are some realities especially in Asia that have a long Olympic tradition. On the Italian movement, on the other hand, what can we say?
Badminton is a sport on the rise in Italy. Our hope is to bring at least four athletes to the Games to be held in 2024 in Paris. If we look at the numbers of the Federation, we notice an important evolution. It is a little known sport, but we are recovering and there is great potential.
