Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested Saturday and charged with felony battery after a domestic incident in Sandy Springs, Georgia, according to jail records on the Fulton County, Georgia website.

Ozuna, 30, was charged with aggravated assault strangulation, a felony that carries a minimum of one year and a maximum of 20 years in prison, and a misdemeanor assault, family violence, according to records.

In a statement, the Braves said: “We learned of Marcell Ozuna’s arrest tonight and immediately reported it to the Commissioner’s Office. The Braves fully support Major League Baseball’s policy on domestic violence that strongly emphasizes that our society does not It can and will not tolerate domestic violence. Violence in any form. Until the investigation is complete, we will have no further comment. “

MLB is expected to launch an investigation into Ozuna, sources told ESPN, and could suspend him under the league’s jointly negotiated policy with the MLB Players Association. The league could put Ozuna on the restricted list, which would prevent him from getting paid.

The Sandy Springs Police Department in Georgia reported in a statement that agents went to a home on Saturday afternoon, due to a call to the 911 emergency number and entered the place, whose front door was open.

Screams were heard coming from inside, according to the report.

The agents witnessed the moment when the Dominican player grabbed his wife by the neck and slammed her against a wall, according to the statement.

“In addition to the strangulation attempts, the suspect also struck the victim with his arm in a cast from a previous injury,” the text stated.

“The victim had visible injuries, but was not taken to the hospital,” according to the police report.

Ozuna was booked into the Fulton County Jail. A photo of what appeared to be his arrest was posted by a user on Twitter. Sandy Springs is a suburb of Atlanta.

The Braves are in New York this weekend to play a series against the New York Mets. They were beaten 13-2 Saturday night and pilot Brian Snitker said he learned of the arrest after the encounter.

“The Braves made a statement. I affirm it and that is all I know,” Snitker said.

Following a 2020 season in which he finished sixth in the National League MVP voting, Ozuna signed a four-year, $ 65 million contract to return to Atlanta. He was struggling before breaking two fingers and was placed on the disabled list earlier this week.

Ozuna’s arrest comes nearly a year after the date his wife, Génesis, was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor domestic assault.
