Atanu and Deepika reach the individual semifinals at the Archery World Cup

Ace goalkeeper Deepika Kumari and her husband Atanu Das had impressive performances to reach the semifinals of the women’s and men’s individual recurve competitions, respectively, in Stage 1 of the Guatemala City World Cup.

Competing after a long hiatus from the pandemic, the Olympians found their rhythm in the knockout phase to enter the medal rounds.

Deepika, who was in third place in the ranking, was fired in the first round. She defeated Kelsey Lard of the United States 6-0, Aida Roman of Mexico 6 to 5 and Michelle Kroppen of Germany 6-0 to score a semifinal with another Mexican Alejandra Valencia.

Atanu, who finished second and had a bye in the first round, edged Oscar Ticas 6-4, compatriot Pravin Jadhav 6-4 and Canadian Eric Peters 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. He will face Angel Alvarado of Mexico in the semifinals on Sunday.

Among men, Tarundeep Rai and B. Dhiraj lost in the second round, while Jadhav lost in the previous quarterfinals.

Ankita lost to Alejandra 6-2 in the semifinals. Other Indian women in the fight, Komalika Bari and Madhu Vedwan, lost in the second round.

The Indian recurve mixed team defeated Spain 6-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to Mexico 5-4 in the semifinals. The Indian team, made up of Atanu and Ankita, will face the United States in the dispute for the bronze medal.
