Archery: Tokyo 2020 Olympics schedule

For sports fans, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics are an event not to be missed. For the Archery tournament this year there is a novelty and it consists of the mixed team competition. The races are scheduled from 23 July to 31 July 2021 at Tokyo’s Yumenoshima Park. Today I propose the detailed program.

How are archery competitions held?

Five events are planned for the Archery tournament:

  • Male individual
  • Female individual
  • Men’s team competition
  • Women’s team competition
  • The novelty with the mixed team competition

In first phase each athlete shoots 72 arrows and the score obtained is used to determine the pairings of the next phase. By adding up the scores of the athletes of the same nation, the team ranking is also drawn up. There second phase it is direct elimination and in a different format between individual and team competition.

Nell’individual, the first classified of the qualifiers meets the 64th, the second the 63rd and so on. Each match takes place at the best of 5 sets, in each of which the athletes shoot 3 arrows each. The winner of each set will receive two points, one in case of a tie. If the score is at 5-5 after five sets, we proceed with play-off arrows.

In team competition, the first four classified go directly to the semifinals, while those from the fifth to the twelfth start from the quarterfinals. Each match includes 24 arrows (8 per archer). In case of a tie, we proceed with 3 playoff arrows.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics shooting: the program

The qualifications

128 athletes participate in archery competitions, 64 per gender. Each country can bring a maximum of six athletes, three per gender. If a country qualifies a team in a certain genre, it can also bring members to the individual competition. Six spots are reserved for Japan and another four are assigned by a special tripartite commission. The remaining 118 are awarded through World Cup, Continental Championships, Continental Qualifiers Tournaments and the Final Qualifier Tournament, in this order of priority. A country that snatches a pass to a low priority event may lose it if passed by another that gets the pass to a higher priority event. Passes are assigned to the country and not to the individual athlete.

Archery in the history of the Olympics

Archery made its debut at the Olympic Games as early as 1900, in Paris, and until Antwerp 1920 it changed events depending on the edition. He later disappeared from the program, to return to Munich 1972, adopting the current format. The mixed team test also debuts in Tokyo 2020. The most winning country all time is South Korea with 23 golds and 39 podiums. Italy ranks sixth in the perpetual medal table and third if we consider the editions from 1972 onwards.

Over the course of history, the Italian national team has won:

  • Two golds Marco Galiazzo in Athens 2004 and the men’s team in London 2012
  • Two silvers – the men’s team in Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008
  • Three bronzes Giancarlo Ferrari in Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980 and the men’s team in Atlanta 1996
