A bit of panic in Madrid: Real stadium catches fire

The Estadio Bernabeu was on fire. Not figuratively because Eden Hazard had scored a miracle goal, but literally. Wednesday plumes of smoke suddenly appeared from the Real Madrid stadium, but everything was quickly under control. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

In Madrid, work continues feverishly on the renewed Estadio Bernabeu, the home of Real. Cost of the entire renovation? About 575 million euros. For this, the 71-year-old Madrid stadium will be given a thorough overhaul: a shiny silver exterior, a gigantic 360-degree screen, a retractable roof that can be opened in 12 minutes, additional private boxes and a shopping complex.

The new Bernabeu, which will accommodate 80,000 spectators, would be 60 meters high and thus become one of the highest football stadiums in Europe. The works started last year and are expected to take about 43 months.
