3×3 basketball – Germany probably missed the Olympics – sport

The German 3×3 basketball players missed the Olympic premiere of this discipline. The team around WNBA professional Satou Sabally lost their last two group games in the qualifying tournament on Saturday and did not make it to the quarter-finals. Only the top three teams in the tournament will receive a ticket for the Tokyo Summer Games.

The favored teams from France (12:21) and the USA (12:21) each turned out to be too strong. On Thursday, the selection of the German Basketball Association had solved its compulsory tasks against Uruguay with 21:12 and Indonesia with 22: 9. “Despite the departure, I can only compliment our team,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss. “It performed well here and can leave the tournament with our heads held high. I think we can expect a lot more from this team in the future.”

Against France, the quartet Sabally, 23, Svenja Brunckhorst, 29, Theresa Simon, 22, and Stefanie Grigoleit, 31, were quickly behind with 2:10 and did not come back decisively in the game. Against the USA, the DBB team was able to keep the game open longer, but after the 9:11 from the German point of view, the Americans played their extra class. Sabally was the best German female thrower at the end with eight points.

The DBB selection now only has a mini chance for Tokyo. This would first require a starting place at the Olympic qualification tournament in Debrecen / Hungary (June 4th to 6th). The German team is in second place on the waiting list, so either two teams that are already eligible for Debrecen would have to get the Japan ticket in Graz, or one and Estonia, first on the waiting list. Three out of a total of 20 participants will receive a starting place in Graz for the Summer Games in Japan (July 23 to August 8).

The basketball variant, in which two teams with three players each play on one basket at the same time, will be Olympic for the first time in Tokyo. German men already had no more Olympic chance at the 3×3, in the hall, the team of national coach Henrik Rödl will be playing for the Tokyo ticket in Split in just over a month.
