Ostapenko wins a convincing victory in the first round of the WTA 1000 Madrid tournament

Anastasia Sevastova also reached the second round of this tournament on Thursday.

Ostapenko is in the 50th place in the WTA rank, but the Duke is in the 73rd position.

Achieving the second round Ostapenko gives 65 WTA ranking points. There she will meet one of the US tennis players – Venus Williams (WTA 91) or Jennifer Brady (WTA 14).

In the approximately 65-minute fight, Ostapenko was better at his serve and also at the reception of the serve. Latvian tennis players played all five breakballs, but the opponent defended the serve in six out of ten cases.

The two tennis players have not met each other so far.

Last week, Ostapenko conceded 7-6 (9: 7), 4-6, 4-6 in the second round of the Stuttgart “WTA 500” series tournament to the Czech Karolina Pliskova. This season, the Latvian tennis player has overcome the second round only in tournaments in Australia and Miami, where in the third round of the “WTA 1000” competition he gave up the first racket of the rank, Ashley Barthy.

The Duke has not been able to beat the second round of any WTA qualifying tournament this season, but less than two weeks ago she won the Oeiras W-60 in Portugal. In Madrid, she lost her second-round qualification, but entered the main event as a “lucky loser”.

The Latvian tennis player has ten wins and seven losses in singles this season, but the Duke has won four in ten games.

Ostapenko has won three WTA category titles in his career, including winning the 2017 French Open. He also earned three titles during his duke’s career, the most recent of which was obtained in 2019 in Lugano.

The Latvian tennis player is playing in Madrid for the fourth time and has never gone further than the second round.

The Latvian tennis player will also take part in a doubles tournament, where together with Russian tennis player Anastasia Pavluchenko she will play in the first round with Makoto Ninomy from Japan and Kazakhstan Jaroslav Swedov.

It has already been reported that Latvia’s second racket Anastasia Sevastova defeated Bogdan from Romania 6-0, 6-3 in the first round of the “WTA 1000” series tournament in Madrid on Thursday (WTA 102). Previously, the tennis player overcame two qualifying rounds.

Sevastova will not play in doubles in Madrid.

The tournament in Madrid takes place on clay.

Last year, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) also changed the names of the categories of its tournaments as the brand was renewed. The changes have been made in cooperation with the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) so that the competition structure can be understood by fans at the highest level of the sport.

Starting in 2021, the highest level in WTA tournaments is WTA 1000 (formerly Premier Mandatory and Premier 5), followed by WTA 500 (Premier 700), WTA 250 (International) and WTA 125 ( 125 K) levels. Tournament points and cash bonuses remain the same as before.
