Already holder of the number of three points scored in EuroCup (264), Jamar Smith succeeds Luke Sikma (ALBA Berlin) in the MVP of the competition.
Author of a high-flying season (17.1 points at 50% shooting success, including a whopping 47% at 3-pointers, 2.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 interceptions) all in Out of the bench, the back of UNICS Kazan hoisted his team to the final against Monaco, whose match 1 will take place next Tuesday at 6.30 p.m., on Monegasque soil.
With several very high level outings (32 points against Gran Canaria, 8 times over 20 points etc.), the former Limougeaud, French champion in 2015, will have shone throughout this season. In addition, in the semifinals, Smith carried his team against Virtus Bologna, who were undefeated in the competition, delivering three huge performances to Russian fans (18.0 points to 100% on free throws over the 3 confrontations).
In November, during the regular season trip to Bourg-en-Bresse, he gave us a long interview. At the time, he had just passed Rafa Martinez by three-pointers in the history of the competition and looked back on his accomplishments, as well as his goals for the season.
“It’s a pretty incredible accomplishment. This means that a lot of teams have trusted me to help them succeed in EuroCup. I have always been responsible, we have often made sure that the ball reaches me in the hands with an open shot. It’s nice to be at the top of this ranking. [Est-ce que je n’aurais pas dû faire plus carrière en EuroLeague ?] I don’t see it like that. I am especially grateful for what I went through. Of course, I would have liked to play more in EuroLeague, to show what I could do at this level. Now I want to win the EuroCup to take Kazan to the EuroLeague and prove that I can perform just as well there. But even though I haven’t played there much, that doesn’t stop me from appreciating everything I’ve experienced in my career. “
As of next Tuesday, AS Monaco will therefore have a lot to face an MVP eager to add a second EuroCup to its list of achievements, after the one won in 2017 under the colors of Unicaja Malaga.
