The demolition of the ‘La Nevera’ pavilion of Movistar Estudiantes is underway

The Madrid’s community has approved this Wednesday the declaration of the emergency processing of the demolition works of the sports hall known as The fridge, from the Institute of Ramiro de Maeztu Secondary Education, whose cover collapsed due to the accumulation of snow caused in January by the storm Filomena.

This sports facility -whose demolition will cost 186,278 euros- is used by both the students of the educational center and the quarry of the basketball team Movistar
Students, has indicated in the press conference after the meeting of the Cabinet the regional vice president, Ignacio Aguado.

Two weeks after the snowstorm, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz, Ayuso, held a meeting at the Real Casa de Correos, seat of the Government regional, with the directors of the club, to whom the decision was transferred by the regional Executive to undertake the reconstruction of the sports facility.

At the moment, a first phase of perimeter fencing of the affected area had been carried out in order to limit the part affected by the accident and prevent possible damage to the surrounding space.

The pavilion had two modules: the court and a two-storey annex, the ground floor, occupied by the changing rooms, and the upper one, which had a workshop classroom.

The accumulation of snow on the roof, around 60 centimeters thick, together with the low slope of the porch skirts, caused the structure to collapse, affecting all its rooms.

For this reason, and after evaluating the damage, the technicians have decided that the best option to preserve the safety of the students of the institute and the rest of the users of the pavilion was its total demolition.

In the coming months, the Community of Madrid will build a new sports hall, which will involve an investment of around 1.5 million euros.

The Community of Madrid and the Movistar Estudiantes Sports Club They have reached an agreement so that in carrying out the project the opinion of the student team is counted on.

Both parties have agreed to sign a future agreement to regulate the use of the sports facility by IES students Ramiro de Maeztu as for the student quarry.
