Sports Academy with Purposes, instrument of resocialization for young people in conflict

Integrating young people held in custody centers in the practice of sport is the main objective of the Sports Academy with Purposes, which, this Wednesday, took its first step towards its creation.

The Panamanian Sports Institute (Pandeportes), represented by its director Eduardo Cerda, and the Ministry of Government, through Prime Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, signed a cooperation agreement that will allow the formation of the academy.

This initiative that will provide adolescents, in conflict with the law, the opportunity to form physically, morally and spiritually through sports activity. It even gives them the option to represent Panama in national and international competitions.


Some of the sports that will be taught at this center are: basketball, baseball, soccer, futsal, Greco-Roman wrestling, martial arts (karate, judo, kung-fu, jiu-jitsu, capoeira, muay thai, aikido, taekwondo), athletics ( long jump, 100 meter dash), among others.

The academy will initially be located at the Las Garzas Compliance Center and at the Basilio Lakas Custody and Compliance Center in Colón.

The agreement is valid for five years, renewable, as long as there is a common agreement between Pandeportes and the Ministry of Government.
