Doping incident involving Ajax goalkeeper

The European Football Union (Uefa) has suspended goalkeeper Andre Onana from Ajax Amsterdam for twelve months for a doping offense. As Ajax announced, the substance furosemide was detected. The ban is effective immediately for all “football activities”. Onana, 24, and Ajax want to appeal to the International Court of Justice (CAS). Onana had been tested out of competition on October 30th. According to Ajax, the Cameroon national player felt uncomfortable at the time and “took a pill to relieve the symptoms”. He “wrongly” took the drug Lasimac that was prescribed for his wife. The Uefa assume that Onana had no intention of cheating, Ajax said. However, an athlete is obliged to ensure that no prohibited substances get into his body.
