Jordan Spieth emerges at the top of the Waste Management Open

It floats like a scent of rebirth in Phoenix. This Saturday, Jordan Spieth signed a scintillating 61 (-10) to emerge at the top of the Waste Management Open. Ten birdies, no mistakes and above all a particularly incisive putting, as in the great era in short. Because the Texan has been looking for himself for a few years now. So much so that he hasn’t pocketed a PGA Tour title since 2017 and his success at the British Open! The three-time Major winner seemed lost on the course ever since. He clearly found the instructions for his own game on Saturday.

« I just want to trust myself again on the course, explained a Spieth in patience mode. I have no expectation of results for this Sunday. Really none. »

Carried away by the (micro) crowd

Still, the 27-year-old American can clearly see a 12th PGA Tour title. Igniting a TPC in Scotsdale (Arizona) emptied of its crowd of usual fans (5,000 spectators per day maximum), Spieth in particular posted three birdies on his last three holes including one at the 16, this famous par 3 surrounded by an arena. “ It should have been madness at 16 after such a putt, almost regretted Spieth at the recording. It’s in those kinds of moments that we really realize how much energy we draw from the reactions of the public. There it was almost as if nothing had happened … ».

78

It’s been 78 tournaments since Jordan Spieth hasn’t lifted a trophy. On the 78 tournaments preceding this crossing of the desert he had pocketed 11!

Scuffle in trouble

Be careful, however, not to forget Xander Sc Chaudele, who maintains his grip on the tournament. The American, recent second to Torrey Pines, played 65 this Saturday thanks in particular to four birdies on his last five holes. He will share a final game with Jordan Spieth for the first time since the British Open 2018. The two men finished second behind Francesco Molinari.

World No.3 Justin Thomas is 5th after a 63, as is Louis Oosthuizen (63), 14 under par. Steve Stricker, who is trying to become the oldest winner in PGA Tour history at 53, signs 69 for 7th place alongside Brooks Koepka (66) and James Hahn (66).
