Video: Salla, “the cold city in nowhere”, wants the 2032 Summer Olympics

Serious background
Why the city of Salla in Lapland wants the 2032 Summer Olympics

Watch the video: How a small Finnish town is fighting against climate change with an Olympic bid

Welcome to Salla, which it claims to be the coldest city in the Finnish part of Lapland. With this video, the “city in nowhere” wants to apply to host the 2032 Summer Olympics. Too cold for the summer games? One does not want to accept that in Salla. After all, there is global warming – and it will fix it. But that is exactly what drives Salla’s mayor, Erkki Parkkinen: “Our life, our future is at stake. We want to be able to live here as we have been for centuries, for thousands of years. We live here in harmony with that Nature and that’s why we want to continue to experience real winters, warm summers. That’s why we’re worried about climate change. Everyone in Salla thinks that way and we do our best for our part. If everyone participates, we can achieve something for the planet. “
What initially looks like a winking campaign has a very serious background. Because the people in Salla are right about one thing: if mankind no longer takes steps to stop the rise in temperatures, one will probably be able to hold the Summer Olympics at some point in the Arctic Circle – even in winter.
