They begin to qualify for the Puerto Rico Open

Puerto Rican golfer Edward Figueroa and Colombian Marcelo Rozo are the two athletes most recently classified for the thirteenth edition of the Puerto Rico Open, an official tournament of the PGA Tour that will be held from February 22 to 28 at the Championship Course of the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Rio Grande.

According to a press release, Figueroa and Rozo qualified last weekend during the first local tournament for the Open. According to the Puerto Rigo Golf Association (PRGA), another two positions will be filled in February when an additional local qualifying tournament takes place.

According to the letter, another Puerto Rican who is expected to return this year is Rafael ‘Rafa’ Campos, one of the biggest attractions of the Puerto Rico Open through the years.

The organizers of the Puerto Rico Open said they were enthusiastic about the celebration of the main Golf event on the island, which, although it will not have an audience, can be seen through the Golf Channel and will be participatory through the social networks Facebook and Instagram.

“Being an atypical year, we face a new reality with sanitary measures and safety regulations that the PGA Tour has adopted, following the recommendations of the CDC. We are very proud that the PR Open continues to take place. For Puerto Rico, this tournament has a significant impact, and not only contributes to promoting the destination and receiving global projection, but it also has an economic impact for the region, for Puerto Rico and for our communities ”, said David Chafey, president of the board of directors of the Puerto Rico Open, in the statement.

In 2020, the PR Open impacted more than 15 Puerto Rican non-profit organizations that work with children and youth, donating more than $ 1 million.

Since its inception in 2008, the Puerto Rico Open has helped elevate the careers of several PGA TOUR stars, including Jason Day, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Martin Trainer and Viktor Hovland, winner of the Tournament last year.

This year, about 120 golfers will compete for a portfolio of $ 3 million. The winner will receive $ 540,000 and have a chance to earn 300 FedEx Cup points.

Pedro Zorrilla, producer of the Puerto Rico Open, thanked “the trust that the PGA TOUR places in us year after year to continue developing the tournament. Fortunately we have an excellent team; from our sponsors, volunteers, staff, players and first-rate suppliers. It is true that this year will be different, but there is no doubt that we will be able to enjoy an exciting tournament of world caliber ”, highlighted Zorrilla.
