The Uni receives an Al-Qzares below minimums

With no time to rest, Spar Girona faces this evening (7.30 pm) a new commitment of the Women’s League against Al-Qázares. A duel corresponding to the twelfth day of the league and which was postponed to its day after the Extremaduran club detected some cases of coronavirus in the staff. The fact that this is a first-round match will mean that visiting coach Jacinto Corrales will not be able to count on the new signings because they were not registered on the day the match was to be played. Alexis Jones, Petra Zapaltova and Fiona Odwyer will not play today, as they have strengthened the Extremaduran team after the casualties of Elena Corrales, Mariella Fasoula and Merve Aydin, who will obviously not be in Fontajau either. Therefore, Al-Qázeres will visit Girona under minimums, with few professionals in the first team and with the Greek Eleanna Christinaki as the main threat.

The suspension of matches is a common occurrence in many sports since the leagues resumed, and Uni still has another game pending domestic competition against Spar Gran Canaria in Fontajau, which was postponed on 3 January because a Girona player had been in close contact with a positive case for covid-19. The match against the Canary Islands has not yet been set.

And it is that in a calendar as tight of confrontations as the one that has the equipment trained by Alfred Julbe it is difficult to find an empty hole. Girona have two consecutive home games, today and Friday against Ciudad de La Laguna Tenerife, before traveling to Schio (Italy) to play the second and final “bubble” of the group stage of the Euroleague that will begin on Tuesday 19 of this month against Riga and will end on Friday 22, in what will possibly be the duel that will decide everything against who will be the hosts, the Schio Family. In the meantime, on Thursday, he will play against the all-powerful Ekaterinburg.

But that will come. Today it’s time to focus on domestic competition and win. A victory would not mean a jump in the standings, but it would serve to follow in the footsteps of Perfumerías Avenida and Valencia. In fact, the Valencians will be Julbe’s next rivals in the league after the “bubble”. A duel that the people of Girona want to reach with the same defeats as now, two, to be able to assault the second position in their visit to La Fonteta de Sant Lluís.

Today, in front, they will have a theoretically affordable team such as Al-Qázares, penultimate ranked with 5 wins and 13 losses. The Extremaduran team lost on Saturday at the Euskotren (81-69) and has only managed to win one of the last 6 matches. However, Fontajau should not be trusted, not by a long shot, because we have already seen that in this league it is difficult to close the matches. Without going any further, on Saturday, in Zaragoza, Julbe had to work until the end to add the fourth victory in a row (76-80).

Historically, Extremadura is a feasible team for Uni. Since returning to the Women’s League in the 2016-17 season, they have faced each other eight times and the balance has always been in favor of Girona. The last precedent of March 1, 2020 in Fontajau ended 61-55 in a hard-fought match.
