The formula of the Oviedo shooter Alejandro Arévalo: “You have to dedicate many hours and be very clear to go to the Games”

“Why the shot?”

– I think I started when I was 14 or 15 years old because of my father, who practiced it and who was the junior Spanish champion. One day I went to try and I liked it. I can’t say what attracted me, but I started training, always at the Club Principado. Now what motivates me the most is the desire to improve, to do better every day.

– What are the championships that you remember best?

–I won two Spanish championships for precision and one for speed pistol. Last year I competed at the Naples Universiade, although the truth is that it didn’t go very well for me. I trained little because it coincided with the exams, and also the nerves of such an important competition weighed on me.

– What balance do you make of 2020?

– The truth is that for me in particular it was not very bad, but good either. I won the Spanish Championship, but I did not go out to compete as much as I would have liked. During the confinement I was climbing the walls, at home I can not last long. I trained something at home, because you can practice shooting well even without actually shooting. You stand against the wall, put a point at the approximate height, and practice posture and concentration. Obviously, real training is better, but it is not like for example football or tennis, which without real hitting is not valid. Physically, I was able to do planks, sit-ups and stuff, and then I was able to train thanks to the fact that I am a high-performance athlete.

– What is the closest objective you have in your head?

–We have the Spanish Championship at the end of January in Barcelona. Let’s see if it can be celebrated, with all the cases they are having there. This year, with the change of category, which has now become senior, I would like to enter the final.

– And later in the year?

– The truth is that I would also like to go to the Universiade this year in China. I don’t know how the issue will be by then, but it is in August, if the vaccination is going well … If it works like the other time, each country chooses two athletes per category. Nor will there be many competitions in between.

– How much do you usually train?

–A normal week I go four times, about two hours a day or more, but that depends. Right now I’m going three or four times, trying to reconcile it with the exams.

– How far do you plan to go? Some Games?

“I want to go as high as I can, but I have no specific goal.” Obviously, everyone thinks of a Games, and of course I would be excited to go. Realistically … we will try, but you have to dedicate many hours and be very clear about it. I don’t know if it really pays off. When the time comes, I will try if the opportunity arises.

– Do the restrictions affect the club a lot?

–To begin with, we were unable to do the Asturias Championship or other competitions. To go to train you have to make an appointment, you cannot stay long and they have reduced the space by half. Now they have installed a ventilation system that renews the air. The prohibition of playing sports for minors is damaging, although I do not think they will be erased. If you have chosen the shot, it is not because it is fashionable, but because you like it. The truth is that I do not understand very well why people under 16 cannot go shooting and a person of 55 can.
