The 47-year-old has had difficult times. The surgery on his right ankle six months ago went well, but since then he has had to wear a vacuum boot and has not been allowed to put any weight on his foot. The longed-for end of the rest phase has come. “The rehab will begin in the next few days. My goal is to get back to my job as a goalkeeper coach,” says Wache.
The former Bundesliga keeper is very grateful to his current employer, SV Darmstadt 98, for extending his contract as a goalkeeper coach, which is limited to summer 2020, until 2022. Wake has enough time to get fit again. For the troubled honorary captain of Mainz 05, it was not the first serious operation. In 2016 and February 2020, he had to have artificial knee joints inserted.
