Sports surfaces to dream of

The year 2020 ended on a happy note for Paul Caron. His company, Surfaces Carpell, received the 2020 Grand Prize for Excellence from the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) for the athletics track at the University of Sherbrooke, one of the largest in Canada.

This is the second time that the Granby SME has won the highest distinction in its industry for one of its facilities. She also received it in 2016 for the athletics track at Gérard-Filion high school in Longueuil.

“It makes us very proud as a Quebec company to win such a prestigious award,” says Paul Caron. We have always tried to be better from project to project. The quality of our products ensures the sustainability of our facilities. “

Amateurs and elite

FIFA-certified soccer fields, baseball fields in Ontario, athletics tracks, including the one that will host the 2021 Quebec Games in Laval … With nearly 1,500 achievements to its name in Canada and the States United, Carpell has become a leader in its industry in North America, according to Paul Caron.

The latter always feels great satisfaction to see high-level athletes or amateur sportsmen evolve on the sports fields that his company has been installing since the early 2000s.

“When I turn on the television to listen to a sports program, it is very common for the event to take place on one of our surfaces. It always makes a little pile, ”he says.

Since 2006, Carpell has been the exclusive distributor in Canada and installer of prefabricated rubber coverings for the multinational Mondo, supplier of the Olympic Games since 1976. This partnership marked a turning point for the Montérégie company which could thus offer its customers a high-end product. The athletics track of the University of Sherbrooke is Mondo type, certified by the International Athletics Federation, and could therefore host major competitions.

“There is a long love affair between the university and Mondo. She has trusted their products for 40 years, ”explains Paul Caron.

No break in pandemic

The pandemic did not slow down activities for Carpell, on the contrary. “And the year 2021 promises to be very busy, particularly because of public investment in sports infrastructure,” says Caron.

The SME, which employs sixty people during the peak season, also continues to be present in the market for children’s play parks.

“This is what brought us into the world in the early 2000s before we diversified into sports facilities,” underlines Paul Caron.

It is developing new specialties, including sports fields for people with reduced mobility, particularly children in wheelchairs, and mini-soccer fields, whose dimensions can vary from 320 to 16,000 square feet, which are in increasing demand in municipal parks, schools and daycares.

The company also wants to increase its presence in the United States by aiming to expand into the Northeastern American states over a period of three to five years. There’s no denying it, Carpell has the wind in his sails.
