Ski jumper Karl Geiger with maturity and class

Dhe chase from hill to hill continues. Ski jumpers have long since left Bischofshofen. The present is called Titisee-Neustadt. World Cup in the Black Forest. With Kamil Stoch, the great dominator of the Four Hills Tournament that has just ended. And of course also with Karl Geiger, the ski flying world champion, who after his unsuccessful competition on Innsbruck’s Bergisel at the finals in Bischofshofen ensured a conciliatory conclusion as second overall.

“Karl did it really cool,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher, praising his best man’s two excellent jumps. “The favorites weakened, and Karl went through the door.” It was deserved that the 27-year-old Oberstdorfer jumped past Norwegian Halvor Egner Granerud and Polish defending champion Dawid Kubacki with a courageous performance. “I found the right jump idea for myself,” said Geiger before heading to the Black Forest. “It’s really a nice result.”

Markus Eisenbichler slips

Many things stuck with Geiger after this exhausting tour. Right at the top was the admiration for the best ski jumpers have had for more than a decade: Kamil Stoch. “You can only take off your hat to Kamil,” said Geiger. “I value him extremely, also as a person. He has always stayed down to earth. “

Geiger is too. Only once, after the crash on Bergisel, did it burst out of him. But otherwise the opening winner of the Four Hills Tournament stayed with himself. Geiger earned praise and recognition from his coach for his final spurt in Bischofshofen, where he once again showed his maturity and class. “Great respect for Karl for his performance,” said Horngacher, who remained true to his penchant for pragmatic realism. “It would not have been possible anymore. Karl has reached the maximum. “

Markus Eisenbichler doesn’t. Because he showed an indisputable performance in his seventh competition jump and did not even make it into the top thirty of the final round, he lost many points in the overall classification. The result: The three-time world champion slipped from sixth to 16. “Markus jumped at full throttle,” explained Horngacher. “Unfortunately it went in my pants. His time will come. There is still a world championship. ”It will take place from February 23 to March 7 in Geiger’s Oberstdorf home. Until then, the ski jumpers will have more “crisp days”, as Geiger put it after his “ups and downs with happy endings”. “You have to make sure that you regenerate well – collect the grains again.”

Horngacher gave the slogan that his team should get as many points as possible in the World Cup. In the ranking of the best nations, the Germans fell behind the dominant Poles, who brought three jumpers into the top six on the tour, and the Norwegians slipped into third place. The aim must be to correct this. This is only possible with constant jumps, harmonious flight systems – and maybe also looking at the competition. At least that’s how Geiger wants to do it. “You can already learn from Kamil what he does well.” Geiger should be said: Stoch is currently doing everything well.
