Naomi Osaka buys women’s soccer team

(ANSA) – ROME, 28 GEN – Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, number 3 in the WTA, became the owner of the North Carolina Courage, which competes in the National Women’s Soccer League, the first division of American football

It was announced by the club itself through a note and a video posted on its website, where it explains that “Naomi is the first investor in the Courage since, in 2017, Steve Malik acquired control of the club and transferred it to North Carolina”

Osaka, who according to Forbes is the athlete who earned the most money in 2020, hopes to “be an example and inspire future generations” by investing her time and money in one of the best women’s football clubs in the world.

“The women who invested in me made me who I am today. I don’t know where I would be without them,” Osaka commented on the Courage website.

“During my career I have always received a lot of love from my fellow athletes and now I am proud to say that I am the owner of the NC Courage.”

“But my income transcends the desire to be just the owner of a team, since it is an investment in the magnificent girls who are models and leaders in their field and are also a source of inspiration for all young athletes,” said the tennis player

“I also admire the Courage for what it does to support diversities and gender equality in our society, and for this they will have my support,” concluded Osaka

The sayings of the number 3 of the WTA refer to the fact that the players of the North Carolina team were part of several initiatives, including the “BlackLives Matter” movement after the death of George Floyd

There is a possibility that in 2022 the Osaka team will face Angels City, a Los Angeles team that has among its shareholders the American tennis player Serena Williams (11)
