German Angelique Kerber confident in future of German women’s tennis

Berlin, Jan 4 (dpa) – German tennis player Angelique Kerber believes that German women’s tennis is well prepared for the future, although she believes that after her retirement there will be a dry spell of triumphs.

“We certainly have a lot of good young players and I hope that several will burst (onto the circuit) in a couple of years,” the 32-year-old tennis player told dpa.

“However, at the moment it doesn’t seem like there are going to be (German) players in the top 10 so quickly after us.”

Shortly after the start of the women’s tennis year, which begins this week with a tournament in Abu Dhabi, only Kerber herself and Laura Siegmund are among the 100 best players in the world, occupying 25 and 51 respectively.

Following the retirement of Julia Görges and the recurrent injury absences of Sabine Lisicki and Andrea Petkovic, the golden age of German women’s tennis appears to have come to an end for the time being.

Despite this, Kerber is confident of German successes in 2021.

“We still have players who play at a high level. There is Laura (Siegmund), also Petko (by Andrea Petkovic). This new year will also be very interesting for the Germans,” said the winner of three Grand Slam tournaments, whose season will begin in February after spending two weeks in quarantine in Australia.
