Football season with Universe is about to fail

Alexander Korosek is more than just insecure. “Why do you do something like that?” Asks the manager of the American football first division club Frankfurt Universe. For months, the Frankfurters have been working with the other clubs in the German Football League (GFL) on a concept that will enable a season even under the currently difficult conditions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. From Frankfurt’s point of view, the efforts are now on the verge of failure.

On Friday, the American Football Association Germany, which is the host of the GFL, sent its “amendments to the license statute of the Bundesliga men and men 2” to the clubs. What you can read there obviously poses major problems for many clubs. In a press release from the association it can be read that the clubs can take advantage of an “exit option” until next Friday and forego participating in the game – allegedly without any disadvantages.

On closer inspection, however, the association combines the waiver of a start with conditions – including a written declaration to waive any legal remedy. In addition, the league will review the applications for a start waiver. The corona pandemic will not be accepted as a general justification, according to the paper.

For Universe boss Korosek, the fact is surprising that the license for the Bundesliga automatically expires with the decision not to start. Therefore, he doubts that a club that does not can compete in a 2021 season. “The rules of the game make it very clear that if you lose your license you are not allowed to compete in the following season,” he says. The clubs have little time to adjust to the new situation. “We are in a bind.”
