Badminton Son Wan-ho Taegeuk mark after selection after 7 years

Overcoming injuries such as Jeon Hyeok-jin and Lee Yoo-rim and returning to the national team

Son Wan-ho (33, Incheon International Airport), the’signboard’ of Korean badminton men’s singles, was selected after 7 years and put on the Taegeuk mark.

On the 26th, the Korean Badminton Association announced the list of players for the 2021 national badminton team.

There were 40 men and women singles players each, 12 men’s doubles players and 12 women’s doubles players.

Son Wan-ho passed the selection with second place in the men’s singles Group B.

The association grants exemption from selection for athletes with high world rankings or high possibility to compete in the Olympics and automatically gives the Taegeuk mark.

Son Wan-ho has always been the target of automatic selection.

The 2014 tournament was the last time Son Wan-ho participated in the selection.

Son Wan-ho participated in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games as a signboard for men’s singles for badminton in Korea, and in 2017, he also rose to the world rankings.

However, due to a ruptured Achilles tendon injury, I spent almost the whole of 2019 for surgery and rehabilitation.

The world rankings declined as he was unable to compete in international competitions.

In 2020, the international competition was canceled or postponed due to the spread of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).

Son Wan-ho’s world ranking fell to 56th.

Son Wan-ho’s passion for the national team did not cool off.

He participated in the selection held at the Muju National Sports Center in Jeonbuk on the 18th and 23rd and obtained the Taeguk mark again.

Thanks to that, Son Wan-ho can continue to play an active part as a’national couple’ with Sung Ji-hyun (30, Incheon International Airport), a signboard for women’s singles, who married last year.

Jeon Hyeok-jin (26, Yonex) also returned to the national team after about three years through this selection.

Jeon Hyeok-jin returned to the court in the second half of last year after receiving rehabilitation due to an unknown injury while being expected as a prospect for men’s singles.

In the selection, Lee Yun-gyu (24, Armed Forces Sports Corps), who took the Taegeuk mark by pushing Son Wan-ho and Jeon Hyeok-jin to 2nd and 3rd place in Group B, emerged as a new dark horse.

Men’s singles Heo Kwang-hee (26, Samsung Life), women’s singles Seong Ji-hyun, Ahn Se-young (19, Samsung Life), Kim Ga-eun (23, Samsung Life), men’s singles Choi Sol-gyu (26, Yonex) and Seo Seung-jae (24, Samsung Life) are ranked in the world. It was selected automatically because of the high possibility of participating in the Tokyo Olympics.

Women’s Doubles Lee So-hee (27), Shin Seung-chan (27), Kim So-young (29), Chae Yoo-jeong (26), Kim Hye-rin (26, above Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (25, Jeonbuk Bank), Jang Ye-na (32, Kimcheon City Hall) For the same reason, the Taegeuk mark was maintained without going through the selection.

Women’s doubles Lee Yoo-rim (21, Samsung Life Insurance) also gained attention as a “high school student national team” in 2018, and then broke away with knee cruciate ligament surgery, but after this selection, he rejoined the national team.

Son Wan-ho and Jang Ye-na are the eldest and eldest of the national team, respectively.

Ahn Se-young, the youngest member of the national team, handed over the title of the youngest to men’s doubles Jin Yong (18, Dangjin Information High School).

Kim Jae-hyun (19, Yonex) in men’s doubles was born in 2002 with Ahn Se-young.
