Badminton: He breaks his racket on the match point

Viktor Axelsen walks on the water. The 27-year-old Dane has not lost a match since January 2020. His unbeaten streak extends to 27 games following his success against Taiwanese Chou Tien-Chen in the semi-final of the Thailand Open. A tournament in which he will play the final, against his compatriot Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus.

Proof of the state of grace in which he finds himself, Axelsen concluded his quarter-final (which pitted him against Daren Liew) with an improbable point. With a powerful backhand, he gave the steering wheel a parabolic trajectory. The latter then fell back on the line, surprising the opposing player. The peculiarity is that on his stroke, the 2017 world champion curiously broke his racket. To his astonishment, he therefore found himself with the only handle in his hand just as he had just finished mark the point of victory.

In the mixed zone, he came back with humor to this last action: “I don’t know what happened. Maybe I’m just too strong (to laugh). It was quite funny. I think it’s the first time in history that someone has won the last point with a broken racket. ”
