Arantxa Rus crashed hard against Venus Williams at WTA Melbourne | NOW

Arantxa Rus was eliminated in the first round on Sunday from the Yarra Valley Classic, one of the preparation tournaments for the Australian Open. The Dutch lost in two sets to Venus Williams and only took four games: 6-1 and 6-3.

The thirty-year-old Russian had no fewer than seven chances in the first set to break the seven-time Grand Slam winner, but left all those opportunities unused. Williams did strike, ran out to a 5-0 lead within half an hour and then gave Rus only one game in that set.

In the second set things went a little better for Rus, but the number 74 in the world did not manage to break the forty-year-old Williams and thus make it falter.

For Rus, the Yarra Valley Classic was her second tournament of the year; she lost in the first round in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of this month. Williams – the global number eighty – has not played since Roland Garros four months ago.

With the defeat against Williams, Rus has a bad general in the run-up to the Australian Open, which starts on Sunday, February 8 due to quarantine obligations, three weeks later than planned. The draw will take place on February 4.

Rus is the only Dutch participant in the Australian Grand Slam tournament among the women. Botic van de Zandschulp makes his debut with the men.
