An unstoppable Bsquet Girona chains the third victory in a row

Looking at the classification of the LEB Or is no longer a nightmare for Bàsquet Girona, which for much of the season has been sailing in the queue, affected by problems with injuries, the virus and the lack of results. But based on persistence, Carles Marco and his players ended up finding the key. At the ideal time, surely, when it was most necessary to take your head off and warn your rivals. The victory on the court of Castellón, the leader, was not a flower of a day. Then Huesca was sent to Fontajau with force, and the same was done yesterday against Lleida, another direct rival, in one of the backlogs that accumulates the team. A good defense, with a powerful Faye in the area as had not been seen throughout the year (18 points and 9 rebounds), and the improvement of outside performances especially with an inspired Schaftenaar, were the keys to a extremely valuable triumph, by how much and by how.

Girona was clearly superior to Lleida, in this there can be no discussion. The cries of Gustavo Aranzana, the veteran coach of the rival, after a timeout when Schaftenaar had finally ended the game (79-60) with a shot of three, already made it clear that he was not at all satisfied with his, extremely misguided in free throw and triple. The locals hadn’t made a start to launch rockets either, but they did look a lot more focused. After about two fairly even first quarters, Girona made the first streak with a partial 11-1 in the last two minutes before the break. From 30-30 it went to 41-31 after two triples by Jónsson (the last, on the horn), one by Sabbath, and a basket by Sevillano.

The mentality of the team has changed. That’s what victories also do. Yesterday, even though at the start of the third half Lleida came to put a couple of strokes in just 4 (43-39 and 45-41), the legs did not tremble. Instead, the machine got fatter and when he pressed the accelerator, he sent the opponent to the canvas. They immediately regained their 10-point lead (52-42, three-point Schaftenaar), and at 3:36 the distance shot up to +15 (57-42) with a Busquets basketball. Faye, meanwhile, continued to excel both on the rebound and offensively. The pivots of Lleida were unable to stop him.

The thing didn’t have much more history. Girona, with the game in their pocket, liked each other for many minutes and the triple by Schaftenaar that placed the 79-60 was final. Maybe unconsciously allowed some easy basketball in Lleida, but the +16 final leaves no room for doubt: Carles Marco’s team has revived and the pity is that now the next game may not be until February 2 in Alicante ( Canoe is delayed by coronavirus and Almansa leads the same path). What are we going to do about it. At least the coach and Jordi Plà will have days to look for a replacement for Dani Garcia, who returns to Manresa and said goodbye to Fontajau yesterday.
