That’s how the day went, that’s the background

The Favre bang in Dortmund!

After two and a half years, BVB pulled the ripcord and parted ways with its coach prematurely. The Pott Club made this public in a press release on Sunday. After SPORT1-Information, however, the decision was made much earlier. (The table of the Bundesliga)

SPORT1 explains the background to the separation from Lucien Favre.

At 3:08 p.m., managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke drove up to the training ground in Dortmund-Brackel on Sunday. Sports director Michael Zorc and licensed player director Sebastian Kehl arrived seven minutes earlier.

Watzke spoke to the assembled team about ten minutes and informed the team of the boss’s decision. He also thanked Favre for his work.

“We are all grateful to Lucien Favre for his excellent work in the past two and a half years, in which he and his team have won two runner-up championships,” Watzke is quoted in the BVB press release. “As an expert and as a person, Lucien Favre is beyond any doubt.”

Zorc explains BVB separation from Favre

At 3:34 p.m. Watzke drove off in his silver Mercedes limousine.

“It is difficult for us to take this step,” says sports director Michael Zorc. “Nonetheless, we are of the opinion that the achievement of our seasonal goals is at great risk due to the recent negative development in the current situation and that we must therefore act.”

Another part of the truth is that the bosses have rarely been so convinced of a coach dismissal in the past. The decision to part with Favre prematurely was behind SPORT1-Information already on Saturday evening after the 1: 5 clap against VfB Stuttgart. Up to two and a half hours after the final whistle, the club superiors sat in a box and made the decision. Watzke did not go home until 7:54 pm and spoke of a “black day”.

That evening, the Dortmund Favres consultant contacted Reza Fazeli. The agent drove to his client’s home and was in charge of the telephone calls with the BVB bosses.

“I think it’s a shame that we part ways here,” said Favre himself on Sunday German press agency: “We have had two very successful years and have a team that would have had a successful season this year too. I am still convinced of that.”

Statements by Marco Reus speak volumes

But: The Favre-Aus had emerged. The team no longer had any confidence in their coach. The fact that there was no longer any basis for a successful collaboration is also reflected in the latest results with three home games without a win. (Results and schedule of the Bundesliga)

After the clap against Stuttgart, captain Marco Reus said contrite: “We are not a team that can defend well. You have to be very clear.”

The club bosses had many conversations with the team in the past few weeks. This solidified the impression that Favre could no longer reach the team.

Favre also stumbled upon Moukoko

Main allegation of the team: Especially against nominally weaker teams, the Swiss should not have given her a proper match plan. In addition, some of Favre’s leading players lacked the necessary courage. BVB acted far too wait and see on the pitch. Quite a few players in the team also disliked the fact that the friendly, distant tactician always spoke strongly to the opposing teams instead of pointing out the qualities of his own team.

There was a lack of understanding for Favre’s actions in the club management, especially with regard to the personality of Youssoufa Moukoko. The fact that Favre did not bring the mega talent in spite of the injury-related loss of Erling Haaland in previous games caused heads to shake. The management team is convinced of the qualities of the 16-year-old miracle striker and trusts him to help the professional team right away.

Favre and BVB – the already difficult liaison has been history since Sunday. The 63-year-old was unable to say goodbye to the team personally. Co-trainer Manfred Stefes, with whom Favre had already worked in Mönchengladbach, was also fired.

Terzic takes over – BVB wants a great coaching solution

In Edin Terzic, BVB is now relying on an internal solution. The 38-year-old previous assistant coach will initially be promoted and should lead the team until the end of the season. The Sauerland native will introduce himself at a press conference on Monday at 1:15 p.m. The BVB executives are convinced that the young coach can especially grab the team emotionally. That was completely lacking under Favre.

After SPORT1-Information, Terzic should only work as head coach until June 30th and then move back to the second tier. The BVB bosses are striving for a great solution with all their might.

Preferred candidate: Marco Rose, who still has a contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach until 2022, in the summer SPORT1-Information has an exit clause – and Julian Nagelsmann (RB Leipzig, contract until 2023).
