Standard now gives ex-assistant Mbaye Leye a chance as head coach | Jupiler Pro League

Standard hopes to turn the tide with Mbaye Leye as T1. The 38-year-old Senegalese was passed over last summer for a possible promotion, but was now able to convince the Liège administration. He succeeds Philippe Montanier and will sign until the end of the season.

Mbaye Leye seemed to be getting a career plan at Standard when he took his first steps in coaching last season as assistant to Michel Preud’homme.

The ex-striker would ripen for two seasons in the shadow of Preud’homme, but his teacher called it earlier than planned last summer.

However, student Leye failed to get an early promotion. The Liège administration would have been divided and drew Philippe Montanier’s card.

That turned out to be the wrong choice, as the Frenchman was put aside on Saturday evening after the disappointing results.

Leye came into the picture again in recent days and is now the conductor of the Liege core. Patrick Asselman will be his assistant.
