Skyliners against Bayreuth in the 100-point range

NAfter Matt Mobley had ensured the final score of 104: 86 against Bayreuth with a crashing dunking, the show of strength of the Frankfurt basketball professional was not over. In exuberance of emotions – it was the first Bundesliga home win for the Fraport Skyliners in the third attempt – the Shooting Guard jumped at his teammate Jon Axel Gudmundsson with the upper body on the way back to the middle of the field.

Both could get over the violent clash in friendship, because the impulsive way in which the Hessians had dominated their opponent triggered a final adrenaline rush for them. What a performance explosion: For the first time since March 28, 2016 (100: 65 against Göttingen), the Skyliners, who presented themselves in top form for their circumstances, landed again in the 100-point range. And with 31 assists in 40 minutes of play, they set a first division season record.

Eight of them came from builder Gudmundsson, followed by newcomer and playmaker Joe Rahon with seven. With their brisk pass relay, the playful Frankfurters swirled the Bayreuthers in the ball sports hall. Hardly anyone would have thought that before the sixth matchday, as the Skyliners are the weakest offensive team in the league with 75.67 points per game.

“We are of course satisfied with our assists, with our rebounds and with our offensive performance,” said head coach Sebastian Gleim in his usual sober manner. With the second win of the season, the 36-year-old was hoping “that our fans will at least have a little basketball at home – Have celebrated ”. For them it was a meeting to enjoy from a distance: From the two-point range, the Skyliners achieved a proud throwing rate of 77.1 percent. And from beyond the three-point line they sank 48.4 percent of their litters in a very respectable way. 15 of 31 litters landed in the Bayreuth basket. The biggest scent brand from a distance was top scorer Gudmundsson (25 points), who scored six of his nine throws. Mobley (19) also had an excellent knack for three-point throws with twelve points in six attempts. Not to forget Rasheed Moore (14), who was successful with three of his five distance throws. Center Michael Kessens (20) was also one of the top executors, who successfully completed ten of his 13 litters from the two-point range.

The Skyliners rewarded their frenzy with an accuracy that was exceptional for their standards. The Bayreuthers allowed the Frankfurters more than 50 points directly in their own zone. To the great joy of the Skyliners: “We moved the ball well and had fun,” said Kessens. “That was definitely our best performance of the season.” Raoul Korner, the Bayreuth coach, saw his players in the unexpected role of whipping boys. “Frankfurt just punished us more often than we did them. We had big problems stopping Gudmundsson and Mobley, ”the Austrian admitted. The unequal balance of power in the rebound also counted to the sporting horror balance of the Bayreuthers: 32 rebounds of the Frankfurt team were only 23 against the opponent. Top rebounder was Kessens at nine, who narrowly missed the double-double. With seven rebounds, Captain Quantez Robertson (10) also convinced in this discipline.

The Skyliners now have to take their renewed momentum with them and prove on Tuesday (8.30 p.m.) in Crailsheim that their remarkable success against Bayreuth was not an outlier. The interaction shown this time can be optimally built on. In last Saturday’s condition, the Skyliners would hardly have to worry about staying in class.
