Roger Federer named fan favorite for 18th consecutive year at 2020 ATP Awards

For Roger Federer, the years go by and look the same. On Monday, the Swiss (39) was voted fan favorite singles player in 2020 at the ATP Awards. The semi-finalist of the last Australian Open (beaten in three sets by Novak Djokovic) thus retains his title for the 18th consecutive year. “I would like to thank everyone for this title. I’m training hard so I can get back to the courts. Hope to play in front of you again very, very soon“, said the Swiss in a video posted by ATP on his Twitter account.

Since the 2020 Australian Open, Roger Federer has not replayed an official match. Operated twice on one knee, the co-record holder for the number of Grand Slam victories (20, with Rafael Nadal) is not yet fully assured of being able to appear in Melbourne this winter. “It will be fair. I had hoped to be at 100% of my possibilities in October already. Unfortunately, this was not the case and still is not the case today. I would have liked, it’s true, to be more ahead of my schedule but I’m still satisfied to be where I am today“, he told the channel a week ago SRF, at the Swiss Awards.

This Monday, the other winners of the ATP Awards were unveiled. Moving from 23rd to 8th place worldwide, Andrey Rublev was rewarded for the “best progression of the year”. If Vasek Pospisil was illustrated for “the best comeback of 2020”, Rafael Nadal won the “Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award”, rewarding the player with the most fair play on and off the courts. The Spaniard had already won this title in 2010.
