From 7 p.m. in Floradorp in Noord, dozens of people stood around a homemade fire made of pallets, with music and an occasional bang. Two hours later, the impromptu party was still going on. The annual bonfire in the area was previously canceled due to the corona measures. A tour of the neighborhood pointed it out on Wednesday that not all residents would be satisfied with that.

The only official fireworks that have been set off in the city so far are electric: a light show has started in the Johan Cruijff Arena. There was a countdown moment for children at 6.30 pm, and the adult version of the Countdown Show from start. The national countdown time takes place in the stadium at 11:50 PM.

Rest of the Netherlands

In the rest of the Netherlands it also seems to be quiet at night, except for a number of places. Young people in Volendam, for example, pelted officers with fireworks at the beginning of the evening. The situation was not serious enough to deploy the Mobile Unit, but later in the evening peace returned. The municipality of Edam-Volendam called on parents to keep their children indoors and asked its residents to ‘act normally’.

Earlier in the evening about fifty young people walked around in Den Bosch who caused nuisance and pelted police with fireworks, reports Brabant broadcaster. The rioters also set a car on fire and were responsible for several riots. The police and the riot police would have turned out ‘big’ in the city.
