La Jornada – Judoka Edna Carrillo says goodbye to Tokyo due to pregnancy

Judoka Edna Carrillo won two medals, gold and silver, in international tournaments a month ago, without knowing that she was pregnant. After taking the tests that confirmed a 12-week gestation, the Jalisco gave up the dream of attending her second Olympic Games in Tokyo next year when she was already in the 48-kilogram classification zone.

“I really didn’t know (about the pregnancy) until I went to the gynecologist. I had just returned from Peru and I was surprised. Now I am three months old and the baby will be born in June prior to the Olympic Games and I would not be ready, ”said the Pan American bronze medalist in Lima 2019.

Located in 27th place in the world and with the points for ranking An Olympian who had added to the medals achieved last month in Guadalajara and Peru, endorsed by the Pan American Judo Confederation, Carrillo is not afraid that her achievements will be withdrawn for having competed pregnant, because in sport it is considered doping.

“I know it improves performance, there are cases in which athletes get pregnant and abort, but mine was not like that. I am irregular (menstrual period). I never thought about it, I take care of myself and it did not cross my mind. I didn’t even know I was pregnant.

“I had two doping controls (Guadalajara and Peru) and they surely came out positive. I spoke with the Federation and my coach, they all supported me, and that keeps me calm. We are human beings, one has plans, but sometimes God gives us others. I will have my son and goodbye Tokio ”, Edna commented by telephone from Tampico, where she is happy with Eduardo Araujo, also a judoka, for the arrival of her first-born son.

It is visualized for the next cycle and hopes that this will be the case in Paris 2024 and continue to represent the country as one of the best exponents of judo in the American continent.
