Krawietz on French Open victory in doubles

Einto a strange phenomenon that at the moment of a great triumph you just can’t stand on your feet anymore. You can see that even with the stars. Everyone falls down somehow. I always wondered why. Now I know it. It just flicks through you, comes spontaneously. When we first won the French Open a year ago, Andi (Andreas Mies, the editorial team) and I were both sprawled on our backs.

This time before the final he said, half jokingly, half seriously: “What do we actually do if we win?” But I just didn’t want to talk about it. I’m a bit superstitious. In the dressing room before the match, I saw that our opponents’ coach had two bottles of champagne in his pocket. I had to smile at that. I was still thinking: maybe I’ll ask him afterwards if he still needs it.

The emotions after the two victories in Paris were almost the same. In the first year there was maybe a little more emotional chaos. We didn’t even know that yet. It almost came out of nowhere. This time it was also much quieter in the stadium. Because of Corona there were hardly any spectators. Maybe you could enjoy everything a little better that way. In the evening we sat together in a small group in the hotel. Partying was not an option. We weren’t allowed to go anywhere.

In this respect, the second victory in Paris was just as nice as the first, but different. Because 2020 was a “different” year. During the lockdown, I worked with a friend in the supermarket. They had a need, we had time. The season was interrupted. I cleared shelves or stood in front of the store as security.

One or the other morning shift at 5 a.m. was also there. Then you will realize again how lucky you are. I was allowed to turn my hobby into a job. When you want to get excited about the balls, the wind or the sun on the tennis court, you think about it. I think this experience has brought me a lot.
