KNVB dismisses much-discussed red card for Twente player Oosterwolde | NOW

FC Twente player Jayden Oosterwolde does not have to fear a suspension after his red card last Sunday in the lost home game against AZ (1-3). The prosecutor for professional football of the KNVB has deposited the much-discussed card on Monday, FC Twente reports Twitter.

Oosterwolde on Sunday in the final phase of FC Twente-AZ pulled the broken Zakaria Aboukhlal lightly on his shirt at a 1-2 score. Referee Danny Makkelie initially gave a penalty kick for the Alkmaarders and also drew yellow for Oosterwolde.

VAR Dennis Higler reversed the decision a few minutes later, as Oosterwolde’s foul was started outside the penalty area. Since the penalty kick turned into a free kick and Aboukhlal had broken through, Makkelie was obliged by the rules to give Oosterwolde a red card. With penalties, red cards are only drawn if there is intent.

Referee Makkelie said after seeing the images that he should not have given a red card to Oosterwolde. “When I see the situation again, I would not have wanted to whistle for that at all. I don’t think it is a violation and not a red card”, Makkelie said afterwards. FOX Sports.

With ten men, FC Twente eventually lost 1-3 to AZ. Teun Koopmeiners, who had already used a penalty kick earlier in the match, beautifully shot the free kick that Oosterwolde had caused into the intersection. It was AZ’s first victory under interim trainer Pascal Jansen.
