Judoka Edna Carrillo won two medals, gold and silver, in international tournaments a month ago, not knowing she was pregnant. After passing the tests which confirmed a 12-week pregnancy, Jalisco’s wife gave up on the dream of attending her second Olympic Games in Tokyo next year by already being in the 48 kilogram classification zone.
I didn’t really know (about the pregnancy) until I went to the gynecologist. I had just returned from Peru and was surprised. Now I’m three months old and the baby will be born in June before the Olympics and he wouldn’t be ready, the Pan American bronze medalist said in Lima 2019.
Sitting in 27th place in the world and with the points for the Olympic ranking that she added with the medals obtained last month in Guadalajara and Peru, approved by the Pan American Judo Confederation, Carrillo is not afraid that her exploits will be withdrawn for competing pregnant, because in sport it is considered doping.
“I know it improves performance, there are cases where athletes get pregnant and have an abortion, but mine was not like that. I am irregular (menstrual period). I never thought about it, I take care of myself and it hasn’t crossed my mind. I didn’t even know I was pregnant.
I had two doping controls (Guadalajara and Peru) and they certainly turned out to be positive. I spoke with the Federation and my coach, they all supported me, and that calms me down. We are human beings, we have plans, but sometimes God gives us others. I will have my son and goodbye Tokio, commented Edna by phone from Tampico, where she is happy with Eduardo Araujo, also a judoka, for the arrival of her firstborn.
