Jordan Henderson salutes Liverpool’s winning mentality after returning to the Premier League summit

Jordan Henderson praises “outstanding” Liverpool after “one of their best performances this season” in their last win over Tottenham

Jordan Henderson claimed Liverpool’s winning mentality made all the difference on Wednesday after taking a dramatic 2-1 win over Tottenham in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah’s deflection put the Reds in front but they were held back by a swift Tottenham counterattack that Son Heung-min emphatically put an end to.

Tottenham seemed to be walking away from Anfield with an important point but Liverpool weren’t done yet and in the 90th minute Roberto Firmino sealed the win with a brilliant header from a corner.

Beating Spurs, who were at the forefront ahead of Wednesday night’s game, brought the reigning champions back to the top, and Henderson praised his side’s never-to-die attitude.

Henderson told Amazon Prime: ‘It was a good game, very tactical, probably what you expect when we dominate with the ball, create opportunities and finish on the counter. Overall, the performance was excellent.

“We focus on continuing until the final whistle blows. I am excited about the guys.

‘We deserved the three points. One of our best performances of the season. I’m so happy.’

After the last victory, the Reds have three points ahead of the top of the Premier League after 13 games, despite Jürgen Klopp injuring important players.

But Henderson is not getting carried away by their slim advantage over Spurs and insists that Liverpool’s only focus remains on the impending clash at Crystal Palace.

Henderson added: ‘We’re focusing on ourselves. It might give them a bump, but it’s more about us. Our focus must be on the weekend against Palace. ‘

While Firmino will receive all the praise for his late exploits, Henderson was quick to select Rhys Williams for his praise for his assured performance at the heart of the defense.

“I told you before the game that he was great and it was again,” said Henderson. “He was one of the best players in the park and I could hear him talking the whole time.”

Liverpool had to work extremely hard to win over Tottenham on Wednesday.

Jose Mourinho’s side sat very deep, leaving no room for the Liverpool front as they tried to punish them when counterattacking.

Mourinho’s plan almost worked, but Firmino had the last laugh thanks to his towering header.

After a relatively difficult start to the season for Liverpool, who have already drawn four times and lost once, they absolutely have to get started.

After Crystal Palace this weekend Klopp’s side will face West Brom at home before heading to Newcastle.
