FSV Mainz 05 and sports director Rouven Schröder split up

Rouven Schröder is no longer the sports director of 1. FSV Mainz 05. The 45-year-old agreed with the club on Tuesday to terminate his contract early.

Sports director Rouven Schröder and the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 go their separate ways. The 45-year-old agreed with the Mainz-based company to prematurely terminate his contract, which ran until 2024. The club announced on Tuesday evening.

Heidel asks for time to consider

“The decision to leave the club was not an easy one for me. Mainz 05, the club, the team, the employees and the city have grown dear to my heart over the past few years, it is not so easy to give up”, Schröder said: “However, for my work and for my commitment, I have to stand 100 percent behind what I do. I now had the feeling that it is better for the club and for me to clear the way so that Mainz 05 can reposition itself overall. “

It remains to be seen whether ex-manager Christian Heidel will return. Heidel should join the board as an additional member alongside Stefan Hofmann, Rouven Schröder and Jan Lehmann. Due to the current development, Heidel has now asked for a time to reflect.

Lichte remains a trainer – on call

Meanwhile, Jan-Moritz Lichte remains a trainer – but on call. “I communicated with him clearly: Everything is open,” said the chairman of the board, Stefan Hofmann, at the club’s press conference on Tuesday evening. The question of whether the coach will stay or be replaced can “currently not be answered”.

It now goes “everything step by step,” emphasized Hofmann. The focus of the Bundesliga penultimate is on the cup game against the second division VfL Bochum on Wednesday (8.45 p.m., in the live ticker on t-online).

Lichte had replaced his previous boss Achim Beierlorzer in the coaching bench after the second match day. However, there was no lasting effect: From then on, the FSV only managed one victory in eleven games.
