Ex-professional Roman Shirokov convicted of referee attack

Roman Shirokov has been a familiar face in Russian football as the midfield strategist played for several of the country’s top clubs. He ended his career a few years ago but is still causing a stir.

For his attack on a referee, the ex-captain of the Russian national soccer team, Roman Shirokov, was sentenced to 100 hours of community service. That was decided by a court in the capital on Friday Moscow according to the Interfax agency. In addition, the 39-year-old has to pay the equivalent of 1100 euros.

The judges therefore saw it as proven that Schirokov first hit the referee in the face with his fist during a friendly match in Moscow. When this was on the ground, the athlete stepped on the referee.

From 2014, Schirokov was the captain of the Sbornaya for two years. He was voted footballer of the year twice. In 2016 he finished at CSKA Moscow his professional career.
