Jeff Smith looked like the sure winner against Chris Dobey but was powerless in the end. Karel Sedlacek also lost a 2-0 set lead and missed six match darts.

Dhis match deserved a full Alexandra Palace. Chris Dobey was on the verge of losing after a 2-0 set deficit against Jeff Smith. The Darts World Cup seemed to lose its first seeded players. But the number 22 in the tableau came back in an impressive manner and defeated the Canadian 3-2.

After 300 fans had been there the night before, the four afternoon games took place on Wednesday without an audience. Due to the current developments in the pandemic in Great Britain, spectators at Alexandra Palace are excluded until at least Christmas.

Smith, who beat Keane Berry 3-1 in the first round on the previous evening, took the first set and won the second round despite a 2-0 deficit.

Dobey didn’t score badly, but failed too often on double 16s. His quota after two sets: 25 percent. Too little. “It was just disappointing,” said Dobey later, “but it’s up to you to turn the trend around.”

And that’s exactly what the recently weak Englishman did in an impressive manner, decided set three in the decider and in the fourth round even had an answer to Smith’s six perfect darts in the second leg. The Canadian was at 16 points after nine darts, but Dobey checked 104 points. 2-0. The preliminary decision in the fight for set four. It was now a match at the highest level.

In the decisive round, Dobey started with a 130 checkout over the bullseye and also erased the 81 points remaining in the first attempt to break the 2-0. “Hollywood” made no more mistakes, increased its double quota with an average of 96 points to 39 percent and, after an outstanding final spurt, won 3-0 in set five.

Sedlacek awards 2-0 and six match darts

The most exciting match of the World Cup so far had already taken place at the start of the afternoon session. Karel Sedlacek was already leading 2-0 sets against Ryan Joyce and had taken course for the second round, but had to accept the set compensation and go the full distance.

In the decisive round, the Czech, who had only secured the tour card in January, again had numerous chances. He went to the oche six times to win the match with an average of 93.11 – six times he missed the required double field.

Joyce, who ended up with a throwing average of 92.22, checked the double-7 in the decider to make it 3-2. The Englishman will face Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski in the second round on Monday evening.

Then Ross Smith prevailed in an English duel 3-0 against David Evans. “I’m glad I made it through,” said Smith, who is one of the secret favorites in the second round, José de Sousa.

William O’Connor did not show any nakedness at his start either. The Irishman prevailed 3-0 against Niels Zonneveld. The Dutchman had only prevailed in the final qualifying tournament before the World Cup against Martin Schindler from Strausberg.

O’Connor now has good opportunities, like Dobey, to be on stage at Alexandra Palace after Christmas. In round two he will meet Daryl Gurney, who was recently weak in form, on Thursday.
