“With hearts full of sadness, we announce that Chapecoense President Paulo Ricardo Magro has died,” the club said in a statement. Magro took office last August, and under his presidency, the team took the lead in the second league table this year and stabilized financially.

The club from a city in the south of Brazil became world-famous in November 2016, when a plane with an expedition crashed on its way to the finals of the South American Cup in Colombia. Only six passengers, including three footballers, survived the crash, killing 71 people, including 19 players.

The tragedy provoked a huge wave of grief and solidarity in the football world and the club was restored. Last year, the team relegated from the first league.
