Cavani 3 matches suspended for racist slur on Instagram | Premier League

After the match against Southampton, Edinson Cavani thanked one of his followers on Instagram with “gracias negrito”. Well-intentioned no doubt, but the use of the loaded word “black” will cost him dearly.

Literally on the one hand, because Cavani is fined more than 110,000 euros, but also figuratively, because he has to sit on the blisters of the English Football Association for 3 matches. After all, apologies were to no avail.

“The comment was offensive, inappropriate and has cast the sport in a bad light”, it sounds. The fact that Cavani was referring to the skin color was considered an aggravating circumstance.

“We understand the context, but also understand that the committee considered it necessary to impose a 3-match suspension,” Manchester United responded. “Nevertheless, we would like to emphasize that Cavani is not a racist and has no racist intentions.”
