The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee approved this Monday the inclusion of breakdancing, surfing, climbing and skateboarding in the Paris-2024 Olympic program and confirmed that the 50 km walk athletic event will be suppressed.

The longest test of the athletics program was the only one that was played only in the men’s category at the Olympic Games, which in Paris 2024 will reach the absolute parity between men and women, as explained by the president of the IOC, Thomas Bach, at the end of the committee meeting. In Tokyo 2020 the expected female participation is 48.8 percent.

The quota of athletes participating in Paris 2024 has been set at 10,500, including the new sports incorporated into the Olympic program, which represents a reduction of 592 compared to Tokyo 2020, and a thousand if the reduction of officials is added. The sports most affected by the reduction are boxing and weightlifting.

The Committee proposes to World Athletics replace the 50 km march with a new mixed test, which can be a march or a track, as long as the test adapts to the current format of the venues, and sets a deadline that expires on May 31 next to decide it.

Along with breakdancing, which will make its Olympic debut, skateboarding, surfing and climbing have been confirmed as additional sports for Paris 2024, all at the proposal of the Organizing Committee of the Games. Conversely, the IOC has rejected the additional 41 proposals formulated by the International Federations, and has reduced the number of events that distribute medals from 339 to 329.

Mixed competitions will go from 18 in Tokyo 2020 to 22 in Paris 2024, and for the first time there will be absolute parity in athletics, boxing and cycling. Bach assured that the IOC is preparing the Paris 2024 Games for the post-coronavirus world. “With this program we are preparing the Paris 2020 Games for the post-coronavirus world. reducing costs and complexity of the Games and for the first time in history, participation will be exactly the same for men and women, “said Bach.

According to the protocol to prevent covid-19 in Tokyo 3030, athletes will be able to arrive at the Olympic Village five days before the start of their competition and will be able to stay there for up to two days after their intervention ends, Bach said.
