Cheftrainer Aito Garcia Reneses from the German basketball champion Alba Berlin has tested positive for the corona virus. The capital club announced on Saturday. The result of the 74-year-old Spaniard is also the reason why the double winner cannot compete at the Syntainics MBC in Weißenfels on Boxing Day.
The meeting in Saxony-Anhalt had to be postponed at short notice. Aito is currently symptom-free, has isolated himself at home and is also “under close medical observation” due to his old age, as Alba announced.
The positive result comes from a routine test on Christmas Eve. All other team members tested negative, but immediately went into self-isolation for the next few days. According to Alba, this was purely a precautionary measure.
The team will be tested again on Sunday to rule out the possibility of the infection being passed on. The situation will then be reassessed and the health authorities will be provided with all the necessary information, it said.
Alba submitted an application for the game to be postponed for the duel with the MBC, which the Bundesliga complied with. The rescheduling will be informed in due course. The Berliners were already suffering from the corona virus two months ago. At that time, six professionals tested positive and had to go into quarantine, several games were postponed.
