I want to send a message of support to overseas survivors as well as those in the room with us today.

We share your grief … I will always be connected to you, and that connection has been so strongly supported.

They opened their homes, provided food and shelter to extended families and a host of other visitors [in the weeks following the tragedy].

Many families commented on how important and special this was for them – in fact, I would like to conclude my brief remarks not with my own words, but with the words of a family member:

“Almost four weeks ago I lost my beautiful family in the volcanic disaster on White Island.

It took me so long to process the events of that day in the following days, such as my grief and [loss to my] Family.

It has taken me so long to understand the incredible efforts of the many, many people and ministries who risked their lives, to bring home the bodies of my family, and to enable the injured family to come to the hospital for care that they are could die in peace.

My family has visited your beautiful country many times, and if such a devastating thing happened I am so grateful that it had to happen in New Zealand, where I know that their souls will always rest in peace in natural beauty and love ‘.
