Michael Hussey and Shane Warne have wondered if Tim Paine needs to get runs to claim his spot on the Australian Test.
Hussey believes if Paine is the best goalkeeper in the country then his runs are a bonus, but Warne believes the Australian captain needs runs to hold off challengers like ODI goalkeeper Alex Carey.

“There has been a lot of talk this summer about Tim Paine needing bat runs,” said Hussey.
“For me, that’s almost irrelevant. His runs are an absolute bonus.
“It’s about his attitude. If he’s number one in the country, I think he has to be selected.
“You can’t afford to miss things behind the stumps. Yes, we would like him to contribute with the bat too, but that’s a bonus. “
However, Warne took an exception to Hussey’s hiring when Alex Carey waited in the starting blocks and was ready to take on the 36-year-old.

“So if he doesn’t make runs, can he stay on the side because he’s a good goalkeeper and captain?” Asked Warne.
“If he’s the best goalkeeper in the country, I’ll keep him as goalkeeper and captain,” Hussey replied.
“Interesting Huss, I think he has to run,” Warne hit back.

“I think he’s done an excellent job since South Africa. As the leader of the Australian team, I think he did an excellent job. “
“So if he’s the best goalkeeper and captain and doesn’t make runs, would you consider dropping him?” Hussey answered.
“No, I’m not saying I would consider dropping him, but his place will go under the pump because I don’t think it’s right,” said Warne.
“The goalkeeper has to do runs these days. It has to be like that.
“Everyone wants the goalkeeper to hit like Adam Gilchrist, but if he can’t, he still has to run.”

Paine hit the kink on day two when Australia needed a captain knock at 5-79 p.m. and Warne told him to do runs when his team needed them.
“This is the big opportunity,” said Warne.
“If he gets a big score now, the rest of the runs he does when he walks in and gets 20 or 30 to get the score up is just a bonus.
“But then they need him to run.”
“And he’s a fighter, he’s shown he loves battle,” added Adam Gilchrist.
“He speaks the conversation and he also knows how to go the way.
“He doesn’t overdo it with the words, but he has shown that he is a strong leader.”
Ironically, Paine answered Warne’s challenge almost immediately by not getting 73 out of 99 balls when Australia made a comeback before knocking out for 191.
